Osaka (大阪) is a metropolis in Japan, actually situated at mouth of the Yodo River on Osaka Bay, in the Kansai area of the main southern island of Honshu.

The Osaka capital is the center of Osaka Prefecture. Often known as the 2nd largest city of Japan, Osaka was in the past the commercial center of the country, and now is Japan's second biggest (and the world's 9th) metropolitan region of Osaka Kobe Kyoto, whose inhabitants also is over 17 millions.

A single title that Osaka has is the 1st position in Japan for ratio between day and night populations, close to 140%, the proof of Osaka's cost effective global commercial character. While at dark time the urban population rates third place in the country at 2600 thousand, in light time it grows over to 3700 thousand, the second one only after Tokyo capital.

Osaka is traditionally regarded as the "state's largest kitchen" or the finest gourmet cooking capital of Japanese Islands.

Some of the first signs of habitat in the region of Osaka were determined at the Morinomiya ruins, with its outer shell mounds, consisting of ocean oysters and deeply buried human skeletons from the fifth - sixth centuries BC. It also is thought that what ever is today the Uehonmachi region comprised of a peninsular ground, with an inland sea in the east. During the Yayoi Era, permanent habitation on the coastal plains grew as golden rice farming became widely held.

By the Kofun Era, Osaka grows into a center port linking the area to the western region of Japanese Islands. The large number, and the growing up the size of grave mounds, found in the coastal plains of Osaka, often is referred to as proof of political power concentrating, contributing to the development of a nation.

Osaka was previously named as Naniwa. Before the Nara Era, when the capital used to be transferred with the period of every emperor, Naniwa was when Japan's capital city, the initial one ever mentioned.

In the sixteenth century, Toyotomi Hideyoshi took Osaka as the optimal location for his famous castle, and Osaka may have become he's capital if Tokugawa Ieyasu had not finished the Toyotomi family after Hideyoshi's loss of life and went his administration to Edo.

Osaka Castle really is deeply rooted in the views of people of Osaka as the supreme symbol of the city, as often is the 'Taiko han', the founding father of Osaka Castle, Hideyoshi Toyotomi. This castle site presents the history of the Main Tower, which also has been restored recently by History Museum. The majestic Osaka Castle Park is seen as an 'Historic Site Park', also featuring key historical ruins.
