Kyoto (京都) is a Japanese metropolis in the middle part of the main island of Honshu. It currently has a inhabitance near to one and half million. The capital of Imperial Japan in the past, it is currently the main city of Kyoto Prefecture, as well as a most important segment of the Osaka-Kobe-Kyoto urban area.

Kyoto is situated in a valley, region of the Yamashiro Basin, in the easterly slice of the hilly area identified as the Tamba highlands. The Yamashiro Basin also is bordered on 3 sides by mountains Higashiyama, Kitayama and Nishiyama, with a typical height slightly above a kilometer above ocean level. This interior causes hot summers and chilly snowy winters.

There actually are three rivers in the river basin, the Ujigawa, the Katsuragawa and the Kamogawa.

Kyoto is an very old city with a 1200 year saga. It was set up as the capital of Japan under the given name 'Heian kyo' at and of 8th century. Although many changes have taken place during the time, Kyoto has always implemented the most modern progressive of the period. It has significantly contributed to the country's industrial, economic and social development and military strength. The dauntless and leading spirit of traditional Kyoto's colorful past as a center city is still found here alive today.

However, from the focal point of the tenth century, about two hundred years after its founding, the city slowly began to get transformation. Ukyo became less urban, slowly reverting back to a less populated rural region of gardens and fields. Inhabitants started to move together in the Sakyo region, and Heian kyo mostly growed to the east of the Kamo River beyond the inner city right, and as well into the north. The city end of Heian kyo misplaced its balanced shape and got recognized as 'Kyoto' around the eleven or twelfth century.

Heian kyo was an amazingly large area with a great cityscape arranged around the beautiful grounds of the ancient Imperial Palace, situated in the north. Kyoto Imperial Palace managed to be the home of Japan's Imperial Household until 1868, when the legendary emperor and its capital were relocated from Kyoto to Edo. It is situated in the wide Kyoto Imperial Park. Palace compound is surrounded by a long outer wall and consists of numerous gates, residence halls and gardens. The ceremonies of Emperors Taisho and Showa were still kept in the palace's central entrance hall, but the current Emperor's ceremony had place at the new Japanese Capital Imperial Palace.

Kyoto is not the sort of capital that is just content to stay as it actually is. Instead, it goes on to make every effort toward change and progress, adapting itself to fit the necessities of each new generation. If it can not make it in this effort , the sacred fire of its exciting 1200 year cultural history would certainly be wasted away, making Kyoto just another beautiful city of historical cultural achievements. Kyoto will never give in to this; it really is and ever will be a life historic city.
